A Ghanaian man who was serving as a watchman is serving an 8-year prison sentence for using a catapult to cause harm to an intruder while he was on duty at his workplace.
Identified as Charles Ayisala, the watchman on the day of the unfortunate incident was on duty when an intruder whose name wasn’t disclosed sneaked into one of the rooms Charles Ayisala was keeping watch over and defecated on the floor.
When Mr Charles Ayisala approached the man to seek the reason why the said intruder did what he did, a fight ensued.
Speaking about the ordeal, Mr Charles intimated that the intruder who happens to be a heavily built man held his throat and nearly strangled him to death.
But in an act of self-defence, fearing for his life, he struck a shot from the catapult which unfortunately hit the intruder’s eye.
Unfortunately, Ayisala was arrested and arraigned before the court but Ayisala who earns 150gh a month from his watchman job, could not hire the services of a lawyer.
In court, he was asked to pay six thousand two hundred cedis to the state and three thousand cedis to the intruder or in default serve 8yrs in prison- an ultimatum Mr Charles couldn’t fulfil.
His boss with whom he has served diligently over the years did not pay for him either. Amidst tears from Ayisala, his wife and five kids, the forty-six-year-old watchman had to face the world alone at his new destination in prison.
